Declutter Before You Spring Clean

Now is a great time to have a look at exactly what you've got and get organised for the year ahead

Most of us are looking forward to the warmer weather and so prior to that spring clean make a conscious decision to declutter; it will make your spring-cleaning so much easier.

We've had quite some time now to get over Christmas and have, by now, put away all those lovely gifts amongst all the other lovely things you have in your home.  But the likelihood is that you haven't really got enough space for all those extra items.  Now is a great time to have a look at exactly what you've got and get organised for the year ahead.  Most of us are looking forward to the warmer weather and so prior to that spring clean make a conscious decision to declutter; it will make your spring cleaning so much easier.

One of the difficulties we are faced with when decluttering is we often attach a financial value to objects and sometimes say to ourselves, "I have hardly used it", or "I've never worn it", and so become reluctant to let it go.  In such cases it can be helpful to think in terms of the pleasure you had of owning it, or buying it, and noticing that pleasure has now diminished.  Similarly you may have an emotional attachment to an item that has been given to you.  You may say to yourself, "My daughter bought me this," and so be unable to let it go.  In cases such as this it might be helpful to remember that you enjoyed the pleasure of receiving it, and owning it, and it might help to think of the pleasure it may give to someone else.  There isn't a need to feel guilty if the item no longer sparks joy, so just let it go now knowing that the item has given you pleasure.

Once you have done your declutter and you have decided what needs to go, make sure you get rid of those things straight away.  It might help to put them straight into your car with the intention of taking them to your local charity shop.  It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you will make lots of money by selling them on Ebay or having a car boot sale but, the truth is, if you don't get rid of the items straight away then you are likely to keep them for weeks, or even months.  Take pleasure in donating them to your local charity shop and think about the money they will raise from the sales.
